The DNA Said She Was His — Part 5: Her Word Was Enough

Grant did not answer Mia’s question quickly.

The therapist did not rescue him from the silence.

Hannah watched through the adjoining-room glass while he looked at the five-year-old waiting across the puzzle table.

“Yes,” he said at last.

Mia kept her hand on the blue piece.

Grant kept his hands still and stayed on his side of the table.

“I should have opened it before I knew there was a paper.”

Mia studied his face.

She did not forgive him in a sentence.

She asked if she could finish the puzzle with the therapist instead.

Grant said yes and left when his scheduled time ended.

That answer mattered because he honored it.

Five months passed in ordinary increments rather than one dramatic reconciliation.

The court converted Eleanor’s temporary no-contact order into a one-year final order.

The child-safety agency substantiated unsafe discipline, and the written safety plan barred Eleanor from caregiving.

In the separate criminal case, Eleanor entered a no-contest plea to a misdemeanor child-endangerment count.

Her probation terms prohibited contact with Mia and required counseling.

Eleanor’s attorney delivered two sealed apology letters to Dana’s office through counsel.

At Hannah’s instruction, Dana returned both unopened because the order was a boundary, not an invitation to find better words.

The DNA report remained under seal in the court file and in Dana Cole’s secured case records.

Hannah did not post the courtyard photographs, the lab result or Eleanor’s messages.
