The Maid and the Photograph — Part 3: Fairhaven

Everett Hartnett was seventy-eight years old and lived in a memory care wing in Stamford with a view of a parking lot he thought was a golf course.

His daughter had put him there in 2023 and visited every second Sunday.

The nurse at the desk said he had good days and bad days, and that on the good days he could recite the entire staff roster of a hospital that had closed in 1998.

"And on the bad days?"

"On the bad days," the nurse said, "he talks to people who aren't there. Mostly patients."

Ross signed the visitor log.

Elena signed under him, and hesitated over the line marked relationship to resident, and wrote none.

---

The old man was in a chair by the window with a blanket over his knees, and he looked up at Ross and smiled with real warmth.

"Bellweather," he said. "You've gone gray."

"I have."

"Your father went gray at forty. Terrible blood pressure, that man." He patted the arm of the chair. "Sit, sit."

Ross sat.

He put the certificate on the old man's blanket, face up, and said nothing at all.

Elena stood by the window where she could see both their faces.

Dr. Hartnett picked the paper up in both hands, and held it at arm's length the way older people do, and read it.

He read it for a long time.

"Ah," he said.
